Pet Turf Drainage and Odor Prevention
Pet-friendly turf is a system, not just a grass product. Odor problems often involve what happens beneath the backing, where rinse water travels, and how the area is cleaned.
Start With the Drainage Route
- Identify the direction water can safely drain without sending runoff toward a building or neighbor.
- Ask whether the existing soil drains adequately, whether the site needs a redesigned slope, and how nearby drains will be protected.
- Evaluate turf backing permeability together with the compacted base and underlying soil. A permeable backing cannot compensate for a blocked drainage route.
Plan for Daily Pet Use
- Choose a surface that can be rinsed and cleaned according to the manufacturer's guidance.
- Discuss where urine accumulates most often and how concentrated pet-use zones can be maintained.
- Ask which infill is proposed, why it suits pets, and whether it affects cleaning or moisture retention.
Questions to Include in Your Estimate
- How will water exit the installation and where will it discharge?
- What removal, base preparation, and compaction are included?
- Which turf, backing, infill, and maintenance instructions will be specified in writing?
